Name: Prickly Lettuce aka Compass Plant, Lactuca Serriola
Appearance: Prickly Lettuce grows up to 1.5 metres tall. The leaves are spear shaped and light green in colour. It has fine spikes around the base of its stem. The Prickly Lettuce flowers pale yellow flowers in its second year. Inside the stem is a milky sap.
Storage: Its best to eat fresh as the spikes make it difficult to dry.
Best time to forage: Early in the year.
Additional Information: The Prickly Lettuce is commonly found throughout waste lands, walls, roadsides and allotments.
