Rabbits are beautiful, inquisitive and playful animals. They make wonderful pets and can bring years of enjoyment and satisfaction. They are the third most popular pet in the UK but are also one of the most neglected with 67,000 (RWAF 2012 survey) rabbits ending up in rescue centres every year.
Unfortunately, it seems that many people buy rabbits from breeders and pet shops as they think that they are easy and cheap to look after. As many responsible rabbit owners will know, that simply is not the case. Rabbits can live up to 12 years old and due to their extensive needs it can become very costly when things go wrong.
As an owner of four beautiful bunnies I often feel saddened when I listen to some people talk about their rabbits and the conditions with which they keep them in. Often leading in their lives being cut too short or living a miserable existence alone and in tiny hutches, unable to exhibit any of their natural behaviours.
I have often found that information and advice on rabbit care and welfare found on the internet can range from misleading to dangerous. So I set up Binky About, the aim of this website is to provide a place where you can get some great and current advice on how to look after your rabbits, with their welfare being the top priority. Through sharing my own experiences, trials and tribulations and well known but often at times difficult to find, advice and tips to make sure that your bunnies are binky happy.
I am a proud owner of four rabbits: Flopsy and Lottie are a neutered bonded male and female pair of dwarf lops. Lottie was rescued from The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre of whom I also volunteer for as a pre-adoption rabbit home visitor. Pippa and Polly are neutered rex cross sisters who were in need of a loving home and were to find themselves at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre. Knowing how full they were and falling in love with them, I took them in so they could have their forever home. I am also a member of an excellent foundation that many rabbit lovers will know the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund.
The aim of Binky About is to provide an easily accessible place for those wishing to become rabbit owners, those new to owning rabbits and veteran owners to find tips and advice for looking after their rabbits as well as great ideas for rabbit nourishment and accommodation.
